Terms
Terms of service.
The short version. JAQ gives you a personal AI assistant that chats, texts, calls, keeps your diary and, when you ask, arranges a vetted helper. You pay as you go from a prepaid wallet. The price is always shown before anything is done, nothing is paid without your yes, the assistant always admits it is an AI, and a human at JAQ is always reachable. These terms say how that works and what each of us promises.
Our other documents are part of these terms:
- Privacy notice — what we do with your data
- Acceptable use policy — what you can and cannot ask JAQ to do
- Cookie notice — the cookies and storage we use
- Helper agreement — for people who do jobs through JAQ
1. About us and these terms
JAQ is provided by Alxys Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 17505468, registered office 114-120 Northgate Street, Chester, CH1 2HT. VAT number [VAT number]. Email [email protected].
These terms are a contract between you and Alxys Ltd. They apply to the JAQ website, web app, phone apps, watch app and any other way you use the service. By creating an account you accept them. If you do not accept them, please do not use JAQ.
Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have as a consumer under UK law.
2. Your account
- You must be 18 or over and live in the United Kingdom. We may ask you to confirm your age.
- You sign in with a Google account or, in the phone apps, an Apple account. There are no passwords. Keep your Google or Apple account secure: anyone who can sign in as you can use your assistant and your wallet.
- One account per person, for your own personal use. Business plans will come later.
- Tell us straight away at [email protected] if you think someone else has used your account. We can freeze it in seconds.
- You are responsible for what is done through your account unless it was done after you told us it was compromised, or because of a failure on our side.
3. Your assistant
- Your assistant is an artificial intelligence. You name it and choose its voice, but it is software, not a person. It will say so to anyone who asks and to any business it calls.
- It is good, but it is not perfect. It can misunderstand, mishear, or get a fact wrong. Check anything that matters before you act on it. It is not a substitute for a doctor, lawyer, accountant, financial adviser or emergency service.
- It acts on your instructions. Give clear ones, and if something comes back wrong, tell it (or us) so we can put it right.
- You decide which features are on. Each one is off until you switch it on in the app, and you can switch it off at any time.
- Only the features we list as available are part of the service. We add features over time, each with its price shown before you use it.
4. Prices, approvals and estimates
- Our prices are in pounds sterling and include VAT. The current rate card is in the app under Money → Prices and in each price chip before you confirm something.
- Small things (a message, a text, a reminder) are charged at the rate shown. Bigger things (a call, a helper job) show you an estimate and need your yes before they start.
- When you approve an estimate, we hold that amount in your wallet (or, for helper jobs, on your card). When the work finishes, we charge the actual amount and release the rest. If the actual turns out higher than the estimate, we charge no more than the estimate plus 10% without asking you first.
- Your statement shows every charge, what it was for, and both the estimate and the actual.
- If we get a price wrong in your favour by an obvious mistake, we may correct it; if we get it wrong against you, tell us and we refund the difference.
- We can change prices. We give you at least 14 days' notice in the app for increases; credit you already bought keeps its value in pounds.
5. Your wallet
- JAQ runs on a prepaid wallet. You add money with a card (Stripe handles the card; we never see the number). The first top-up is £50. Credit in your wallet is in pounds, including VAT, and can be spent only on JAQ's own services.
- Auto top-up is on by default: when your balance drops under £10, we charge your card £50. You set the trigger, the amount and a monthly ceiling in Money → Limits, or turn it off.
- If a top-up fails, the assistant keeps doing free things and anything already in progress (it will never hang up on a call), pauses new paid work after a short grace period, and tells you plainly.
- Wallet credit is not cash, earns no interest, cannot be transferred to another person, and cannot be spent anywhere but JAQ. We are not a bank or an e-money institution.
- Credit does not expire while your account is open. If your account is closed, unused credit is refunded (section 6).
6. Cancelling and refunds
- 14-day cooling off. You can cancel your account within 14 days of opening it, for any reason, and we refund what you put in minus the value of anything you used in that time. You agreed, when you opened the account, that the service could start straight away.
- Any time after that, you can close your account in Me → Your data → Delete account. We refund your unused wallet credit to the card you paid with within 14 days.
- Something went wrong? If the assistant charged you for something it got wrong, or a call or job did not do what was agreed, tell us and we refund or credit it. Money → Statement → Dispute or [email protected].
- Helper jobs are refunded under section 9.
7. Your phone number
- If you switch it on, we allocate you a UK mobile number. The assistant answers it, takes messages, screens callers and replies to texts. The number costs the monthly amount shown on the rate card.
- The number belongs to Alxys Ltd and is lent to you. You cannot port it out. We may change it if the telephone network requires it, with notice. If you switch the feature off, close your account or stop paying for it, the number goes back to our pool after 30 days.
- Do not use the number for emergencies. It cannot call 999 or 112, and it is not a replacement for your own phone. Do not use it as your only contact number for banks, doctors or anything important, or as a number for receiving security codes.
- Calls are recorded so the assistant can tell you what was said. You can turn recording off. It is your responsibility to use recordings lawfully.
8. Calls and texts made for you
- When you ask, the assistant phones or texts businesses on your behalf: to check opening hours, make a booking, chase a delivery. Each call needs your approval with the estimate shown.
- The assistant always tells the business it is an AI assistant calling for you, and that the call is recorded. It will not pretend to be human.
- At launch the assistant calls businesses only, not private individuals.
- You must not ask it to call anyone for an unlawful, abusive or harassing purpose, to make nuisance or marketing calls, or to deceive. See the acceptable use policy. We monitor for misuse and will stop it.
- The assistant can agree things on your behalf within the instructions you gave it (book Tuesday at 10, not Wednesday). You are bound by what it agrees within those instructions, the same as if you had made the call. It will not pay anyone unless you have approved the payment.
9. Helpers
Helpers are self-employed people, vetted by us, who do real-world jobs you ask for: gardening, cleaning, errands, collections and the like. This part applies when you book one.
- Who you are contracting with. The job is a contract between you and the helper. The helper provides the service; JAQ arranges it, vets the helper, holds the booking, moves the money, and runs the ratings and disputes process. We charge a service fee, shown separately in the price you approve. We may issue the receipt for the helper's work on their behalf.
- Price. You see the helper's rate, our fee and an estimate of hours before you approve. The estimate is authorised on your card (not from your wallet) when you approve and charged for the actual time when the job is done. The remainder is released.
- Confirming the job. The helper checks in and out with photos. You confirm the job is done, or it confirms itself after 72 hours if you have not raised a problem.
- Problems. Raise one in the app within 72 hours of the job. The assistant gathers both sides; a person at JAQ decides; any refund comes from the amount held. You can also complain to us directly at any time.
- Cancelling. Cancel free of charge up to 2 hours before the start. After that, or if the helper arrives and cannot do the job for a reason on your side, one hour at the agreed rate is charged.
- Safety. Helpers have passed identity checks, right-to-work checks and a basic criminal records check, and carry public liability insurance. We still ask you to use judgement: be present for indoor work, keep valuables away, and tell us about anything that worries you.
- What we are not. We do not employ helpers and we do not do the work ourselves, so we are not liable for the quality of the work beyond our role in arranging it, running the disputes process and refunding from the held amount. This does not limit our liability where the law says it cannot be limited (section 12).
- Do not contact a helper to arrange work outside JAQ for 12 months after a job. The vetting, insurance and disputes process exist to protect you both.
10. Your content and our service
- What you tell your assistant, send it and ask it to remember is yours. You give us permission to store it and process it, including through the AI and other providers in our privacy notice, only so far as needed to provide the service to you. We never use it to train AI models and we never sell it.
- You must have the right to send us what you send (for example, do not upload documents you are not allowed to share).
- What the assistant writes for you (a draft, a summary, a list) is yours to use. It may be similar to what it writes for others, and we cannot promise it is original or free of errors.
- JAQ itself, its software, design, name and logo are ours or our licensors'. You may use the service as these terms allow; you may not copy it, resell it, reverse engineer it or use it to build a competing product.
11. Availability and beta
- We aim to have JAQ available at all times, but it depends on the internet, telephone networks and the providers we use, so we cannot promise it. Any paid task that fails because of a fault on our side is not charged.
- While JAQ is in beta (we say so in the app), features may change, be withdrawn or behave unexpectedly more than usual. We will tell you about significant changes.
- We may update the apps, and you may need to install updates to keep using them.
12. Our responsibility to you
- We provide JAQ with reasonable care and skill, as the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires. If we do not, you are entitled to a repeat performance or a price reduction, and to your other legal rights.
- We are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this contract or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that was not foreseeable, for loss caused by your breaking these terms or the acceptable use policy, or for business losses (JAQ is for personal use).
- Because the assistant is an AI that acts on your instructions, we are not responsible for the consequences of a decision you took on the basis of something it told you where a reasonable person would have checked first (section 3).
- Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit.
- Subject to the above, our total liability to you for all claims in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of £500 and the amount you paid into your wallet in that period.
13. Suspending or closing accounts
- You can close your account at any time in the app. We refund unused credit (section 6) and delete your data as the privacy notice says.
- We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms or the acceptable use policy, if we must by law, if your payments repeatedly fail, or if your account is used for fraud or abuse. We tell you why unless the law prevents it, and you can ask us to review the decision.
- If we close your account for a reason that is not your fault (for example, we stop offering the service), we give you at least 30 days' notice and refund unused credit.
- Sections 10, 12 and 15 continue after your account is closed.
14. Changes to these terms
We can change these terms to reflect changes in the law, in our providers, or in the service. For changes that affect you materially, we give at least 30 days' notice in the app and by email, and you can close your account and have your unused credit refunded before they take effect. Using JAQ after the date a change takes effect means you accept it. The version and date at the top tell you which terms you are reading.
15. Law, disputes and contact
- These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. You can bring a claim in the courts of England and Wales; if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring one in your local courts.
- If something goes wrong, tell us first: [email protected], or in the app under Me → Help. A person will answer. We aim to resolve complaints within 14 days.
- We are not currently signed up to an alternative dispute resolution scheme; you remain free to go to court. If that changes, we will say so here.
- If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still do so later.
